Webinar "Large Carnivores: strategies for a better coexistence"

The webinar “Large carnivores: strategies for a better coexistence" will be held on March 27 at 10.30 (CET) organized by the Europarc Federation and the EU Platform on Coexistence between People and Large Carnivores - an assembly of organisations representing different interests groups brought together to promote and find solutions to minimise conflict, share knowledge and best practice.

The webinar will be moderated by Valeria Salvatori, co-author of the guidance document of the European Commission "Guidelines for management of population level management plans for large carnivores".

The return of large carnivores to Europe is considered by many as a great conservation success, but it brings some new challenges too, raising potential conflicts between livestock owners, hunters, local authorities, protected areas and NGOs.

The "us or them" argument seems no longer valid and it is time to find joint solutions and collaborate for a better coexistence between people and large carnivores.

There are many successful examples that demonstrate how conflicts can be reduced through prevention, education, training and awareness-raising. In this webinar, some successful initiatives that have been implemented in Estonia, Italy and Portugal will be told.

Case study 1 - Management of conflicts between large carnivores and farmers in Estonia, Tõnu Talvi, Environmental Board of Estonia.

Case study 2 - Active collaboration with livestock owners to mitigate the impact of the wolf in Central Italy, Luisa Vielmi, NGO DifesAttiva, Italy.
