New website for livestock sector specialists
The new portal provides information on how building a fence and advices on how to properly breed protection dogs. Despite such tools cannot be considered the ultimate solution to the predations, they are a valuable support to farmers, as specifies the team that implemented the project. The members of the Medwolf Project explain that at present, the wolf occur permanently in much of the Apennines and is more and more moving toward hilly and plain areas, getting in contact with the part of the population that never had to deal with wolf before.
In order to face these new challenges, the new website provides support to associations in assisting farmers on possible strategies. Furthermore, the portal includes information on the current legislation about the indemnity for damages caused by the predator on domestic cattle. We hope this information could have a wide use and we engage in a permanent updating of information and evidence.
The choice of adopting guarding dogs in order to protect livestock, must follow a precise rules that, if not respected, could affect the work and efficiency of the dog itself, becoming a problem for the farmer. Even in the case of fences, various alternatives could be chosen with the assistance of specialised staff. In some cases there is the need to develop a long-term strategy that can include actions for the protection of both productive activitis and the wolf, bringing losses to sustainable levels, and considering the social bearing capacity along with the environmental one.
